Week 33: Goodbye, 382 Shin Dang Dong

Dear Parents and Students,
This week our main selection is Goodbye, 382 Shin Dang Dong. It tells the story of a girl named Jangmi. She is a girl living in Korea. She has a best friend, loves chummy melons, and appreciates the monsoon season. However, she is moving with her parents to Massachusetts—half a world away—and she is worried and sad about such a big move. Jangmi says good-bye to her extended family, good-bye to her friend, and flies to her new home. She settles into her new home in Massachusetts, but knows she will never forget her first home in Korea.

Activity
Talk together about what it would be like to leave your home. What would be the advantages and disadvantages? Where do you think you would want to go? What would make you want to stay?

Sequence of
Events
The sequence of a story is the order in which event in a story take place. This week's Reading skill is sequence of events. This tells the reader when the main events of a story happen. Clue words such as first, next, then, and finally are often used to signal the sequence of events.

Skill Activity
Think of familiar tasks and tell them with the steps out of order. Have other players tell you the correct order of events for that task.

  3. Mrs. Telford,
I did the activity about what it would be like to leave home. I think that it would be neat to live in a new place and meet new people, but I do not think that I would like to leave my old friends. If I moved, I think that I would want to move to Disney World. I would want to live in the Cinderella's castle.

  4. Mrs. T,
I don't think that I would like to move away. I would not like to be away from my friends and family or the things that I loved.

  5. Mrs. Telford,
If I moved away, I would want to live on the moon. I think that it might be neat but I might get lonely.

  6. Mrs. Telford,
I would really want to try to live somewhere else, but my parents would have to go with me. I would only move if they came with me.
